In February 2024 the government directed all operators of short-term rentals, including Airbnb units, to register with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA).
- Reported fees: KES 1,000 to apply and KES 26,000 per unit per year.
- Licensed hosts remit a 2% levy on gross receipts.
- Units can be inspected for safety and security before a licence is issued.
- Tenants who short-let need the landlord's written consent.
Fees and rules change; check current requirements with the TRA before listing a unit.
