01 DETAIL05 URBAN

A single long roof that gives a street market shade, rain cover, light and water, while leaving the street open.

The canopy is infrastructure, not a building: the traders arrange their stalls, the roof provides shade, light, drainage and power points on every column.

Rain from the roof is stored in tanks under the end bays and used for cleaning the market.

Structural logic

Tapered steel columns on a 6 m by 14 m grid carry steel portal beams and timber purlins under a corrugated roof with translucent strips. Each bay is identical and bolted, so the canopy can be extended or moved.
