Act I

The brief & the constraint

A dark, quiet condominium for a family that works late.

A three-bedroom condominium on the eighth floor. The owners are both surgeons, usually home after dark, and wanted rooms that feel restful at night rather than bright by day.

They asked for dark finishes, and were worried the flat would feel smaller.

Dark surfaces absorb light — and with it, the sense of depth.

Act II

The framing decisions

  1. Decision 01

    Dark below, light above

Smoked oak and marble stop at 2.1 m. Above that line, walls and ceiling are a warm pale plaster. The eye reads the pale band as height, so the rooms keep their volume.

    Section — dark datum at 2.1 m
  2. Decision 02

Light the edges, not the middle

No central downlights. Light comes from coves, shelf edges and a bronze-mesh screen in front of the kitchen, so surfaces glow and corners stay soft.

  3. Decision 03

A marble frame for the view

The window wall is lined in Nero Marquina marble, so the river view at night sits inside a dark frame and reads as the brightest thing in the room.
